Highcross Leicester is one of the largest regeneration projects to take place in Leicester in recent years.
It’s transformed a major site in the centre of the city and it’s a fascinating process.A development like Highcross Leicester can teach a lot about what’s involved – and there’s a wealth of things to find out about. For a start, we’ve made some important new discoveries about Leicester’s history as a result of archaeological excavations. There’s a surprising number of different companies involved in helping us just physically build Highcross Leicester. . In the meantime, you’ll find some key facts below:
- Highcross is over 100,000 m2 in size. That’s the equivalent of 20 football pitches or 80 Olympic-size swimming pools.
- Highcross cost £350 million to develop.
- Highcross was jointly developed by Hammerson plc and Hermes Real Estate.
- Highcross has the biggest John Lewis department store outside London. It’s 22,000 m2 in size and it has four-levels.
- Over 30,000 m2 of new retail accommodation on two levels. This includes five large flagship stores and 40 shop units.
- Highcross has Leicester’s very first city-centre multiplex cinema.
- Fifteen new cafes and restaurants are open at Highcross.
- Two new public squares created at the heart of Highcross - St Peter's Square and Grammar School Court.
- 120 apartments as part of Highcross. These are above the shops and restaurants and they all have balconies.
- The new 2,000-space multi-storey shoppers car park has a design which will be unique to Leicester and is linked to Highcross by a glazed footbridge suspended above Vaughan Way.
- The Shires Shopping Centre has been modernised and refurbished to become part of Highcross.
- The current catchment population (people living in and around Leicester who are likely to be attracted to shop at Highcross) will rise to 1.52 million because of all the new retailer brands and restaurants that are going to be at Highcross.
- Highcross opened on 4th September 2008.
